Dining Room Makeover

When we were thinking about our dining room and how we wanted it to look the first factor I took into consideration was I needed it to be kid friendly.  Kids are messy.  Really messy.  I will be the first to admit, I like the finer things in life, but when it comes to my house and decorating it needs to be practical or its just a waste of money.  There was a time when I would have thought going to a furniture store and picking a set of dining room furniture would be the way to go.  I was confused about my style, but once we bought our first home and re did everything I started to develop my own style which is what I like to call eclectic-modern-vintage.  Oxymoron I know.

For our dining room here I have mixed random thrifted finds with new modern pieces.  It's just my style.  Certainly not for everyone, but it works for me.  Once you define your style, whatever it may be, it makes decorating even more fun.

Our little cabin in the woods is definitely made of wood like I have said many times before.  Wood everything.  Floors, walls, windows so our furniture choices need to be a little bolder in my opinion.
I found the dining table at an estate sale for $20.00.  I had originally painted it gray and it worked with the chairs when I first covered them.  Here is what the chairs looked like before the second repaint/recover.

I painted them an off white color with Annie Sloan's chalk paint and recovered them in 2 different fabrics.  They worked for a while until EM moved from the high chair to the dining chairs.  They were a mess.  Food everywhere! The fabric definitely wasn't kid friendly.  That's when I found the current fabric on fabric.com and get this...it's laminated!!  Yes, laminated!  They wipe clean and no child can ruin them.  Love!

I purchased the rug through a Young House Love sale on Joss & Main for $50.00.  I even had a $25.00 credit so technically I only paid $25.00 for the awesome black and white chevron rug.  The Aqua Hutch is my most viewed post on my blog and cost me $19.00 at the thrift store (before paint and supplies of course.  It was a mess)

My awesome sister made us this address art when I sent her a swatch of the fabric.  I just love them and yes, I am aware that we have moved quite a few times!

Here is a quick look at the space before we moved in with the after.

How do you define your style?

Update on Dining Room and Life in General

Hi All,
Our camera has been out of commission for about 2 weeks now.  We'll have it back on Sunday and I can finally post some of the projects I've been working on.

Remember the dining room chairs that I wanted to recover and I gave you a few of the fabric choices I was thinking of in this post?  Well I didn't go with any of them.  It is so me to narrow them all down and then change my mind.  But in the end I am soooo glad I did.  I chose this fabric from Fabric.com and it is awesome.

The fabric is LAMINATED so its perfect for our dining room.  EM has "put her mark" on every chair and now all I have to do is wipe it down.  Its amazing!  I can't wait to post about the finished project!  Sunday cant come soon enough.

I am also overhauling our entryway and these colors (and maybe even this fabric) will be back if I can figure out how to sew a custom cushion for an entertainment center turned bench I made.  My sister created this awesome art for me to hang in either the entryway or the dining room.  There are 4 in total--but I am only sharing 3 since the 4th is our current address (and its a shame that I don't want any stalkers or weirdo's showing up because its my favorite print)!  How amazing are they..and she!!  They are going in white frames with white matting.

I also have our new TV stand that we made from an old vintage typewriter crate.  It looks awesome in our living room so look for that project coming soon.

I am looking forward to sharing all of my projects with you soon!

Hutch in my FAVORITE color!

Once you've been around here for a while you will see a pattern.  I love the color blue....all shades--I don't discriminate!  Light aqua all the way to dark teal...you will see many pieces in this color.  I'm warning you now.

I found this piece at one of my favorite places--Goodwill!  It was a "Blue Tag Special"-50% off!  I ended up paying $19.00 for this solid wood hutch.  It had 3 different types of handles--Three of them were eagles--yes, like the bird.  Who does that???

A steal at $19.00!
Love the detail

I gave her a light sand and then primed her.  She received two coats of Rustoleum Spray Paint in Aqua.  The same color as my sisters side tables and dressers .  I love the coverage that spray paint gives.  If you haven't tried spray paint dont be afraid!  Just keep spraying in a continuous motion side to side.  Start and end OFF of the piece.

Sometimes I just paint the old hardware to give it a new life, but these needed to be changed.  I opted for these crystal knobs from Home Depot.

The square white plates are from Crate & Barrel and the awesome funky plates were a wedding gift from a great friend.  They are Villeroy & Boch and I adore them!!  I love the color, shape and everything about them.  I picked up the blue plate at a student pottery sale at Penn.

Those beautiful hydrangea's are my valentines flowers.  Simple and beautiful!  Love it!

My lovely neighbor gave us this beautiful handmade bowl as a wedding gift.  I absolutely love it and its one of our favorite gifts.

My hubs picked up this deer skull at an antique store.  I like the look, but I still won't pick it up...I make him move it and clean it.
